A week and a half before the official release date, the new movie American Gangster has been uploaded to the bit torrent networks and has been illegally downloaded by tens of thousands. This was in the first twenty hours online and it is continuing now. The quality of this new movie is as good as a retail DVD, not like the poor quality of the video camera taped, typical, pirated movies, which repel audiences.
What will stop consumers from downloading this new movie? American Gangster is due to open November 2 and released to other world markets in February 2008. This illegal copy isn't going to affect the American box office, but it is likely to hurt the foreign market hard.
Recently Eli Roth, the horror director, blamed piracy for the lower than expected numbers for Hostel:Part II. His film was leaked online a week before its release, in workprint form.
American Gangster stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. Russell Crowe plays the part of a detective who is working to bring down Frank Lucas' (Denzel Washington) drug network in this new movie. Lucas is smuggling heroin into Manhattan in soldiers' coffins from Vietnam. This new movie has gotten fabulous reviews and I can't wait to see it in the theatres!
